DSM Data Center

Location
Des Moines, IA
Project Type
Cooling System Upgrade

Project Overview

DSM Data Center in Des Moines needs year-round cooling for its data and electrical rooms. Its original water-cooled chiller plant and air handling equipment were expanded with additional cooling options to take advantage of Iowa’s seasonal conditions.

Project Rebates & Economic AssistanceMore than $500,000

The Challenge

Running the original chillers throughout cold weather created an opportunity to reduce winter operating and maintenance costs. Modeling showed that the best approach varied with conditions, making control of the complete cooling system as important as the selection of individual machines.

Masters Solution

Masters supplied Daikin Applied water-cooled chillers, Daikin Applied air-cooled chillers, Daikin Applied air handlers and free-cooling dry coolers. Masters programmed Tridium building automation to select and activate the appropriate cooling modes based on the modeled hybrid strategy. Bringing the equipment and control sequences together allows the plant to use different cooling methods as conditions change. System modeling and utility coordination also supported more than $500,000 in rebates and economic assistance, as documented in the original Masters project account.
