Project Overview
Maplewood Intermediate & Middle School in Menasha brings grades 5–8 together in an all-electric learning environment. Geothermal heating and cooling, rooftop solar and collaborative classroom neighborhoods support the school’s net-zero energy design strategy.
The Challenge
Heating, cooling and ventilating the school without natural gas required a coordinated approach to energy use. Outdoor-air conditioning and humidity management had to support classroom and common-area comfort, while extensive ductwork, piping and heat pumps fit within limited ceiling space with service access preserved.
Masters Solution
Masters supplied AAON water-source geothermal heat-pump units for dedicated outdoor-air and common-area applications, with energy recovery wheels and modulating hot-gas refrigerant reheat. The geothermal units connect these airside applications to the school’s water-source system. Energy recovery helps reduce the load of conditioning ventilation air, while hot-gas reheat uses recovered refrigeration heat to manage supply-air temperature during dehumidification. Together, these features address fresh air, humidity and comfort within the school’s all-electric energy strategy.
