Project Overview
The Sonnentag at UW–Eau Claire combines an event center, fieldhouse and wellness facilities for university and community use. Geothermal heating and cooling are part of a broader sustainability approach that earned LEED Gold certification.
The Challenge
Daily recreation and large events create very different heating and cooling demands. The engineer sized the geothermal system for typical loads and used supplemental equipment for occasional peaks, addressing life-cycle cost without sizing the ground system around infrequent extremes.
Masters Solution
Masters supplied Multistack geothermal chillers and Daikin Vision AHUs. The chillers support the geothermal heating and cooling strategy, while the air handling units condition and distribute air for the venue’s changing uses. This equipment combination connects central thermal production with the comfort and ventilation needs of recreation and event spaces. Within the engineer’s hybrid design, the package supports efficient everyday operation while the overall system accommodates larger event loads.
