Project Overview
The UW–Milwaukee School of Freshwater Sciences combines aquatic research habitats, laboratories, classrooms and offices in an expanded and renovated Harbor District facility. Those different uses call for dependable environmental control and careful management of energy.
The Challenge
Aquatic habitats need stable temperatures, while laboratories depend on controlled pressure relationships. Recovering heat from potentially corrosive laboratory exhaust added a durability challenge, and the system also had to accommodate simultaneous heating and cooling needs.
Masters Solution
Masters supplied Multistack heat-recovery chillers to match hot- and cold-water production to research-habitat loads, together with Haakon custom air handlers incorporating wash-down liners and coated run-around recovery coils. Additional energy recovery preconditions makeup air. Phoenix Controls pressure-control valves maintain laboratory pressure relationships, linking airflow control to the demands of critical research spaces. Daikin Applied air handlers and Enviro-Tec VAV equipment serve classroom and office conditioning needs. The coordinated package addresses heat recovery, laboratory airflow and comfort across spaces with very different operating requirements.
