Project Overview
UW–Madison’s Phillip A. Levy Engineering Center brings adaptable research laboratories, active-learning classrooms and collaboration spaces together. The design team used energy modeling and life-cycle analysis to evaluate conservation strategies for a building intended to accommodate changing engineering programs.
The Challenge
High-infrastructure laboratories must manage exhaust, temperature and pressure requirements alongside teaching spaces with different comfort and acoustic needs. Recovering energy from laboratory exhaust while preserving appropriate airflow relationships is a central HVAC challenge; flexibility and serviceability also matter as research uses evolve.
Masters Solution
Masters supplied Haakon custom AHUs, an Aerofin Coil Run Around energy recovery system, a Phoenix lab control system and Vibro-Acoustics panels. Custom air handling supports the building’s conditioning needs, and the coil run-around system addresses laboratory-exhaust heat recovery. The Phoenix Controls package supports coordinated laboratory supply and exhaust airflow and the intended pressure relationships. Vibro-Acoustics panels address mechanical sound. Together, these elements connect air handling, energy recovery, laboratory control and acoustics to the needs of research and learning spaces.
